Holcomb extends state income tax filing deadline

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb on Monday extended the state’s tax filing deadline by one month to align with the federal tax filing deadline extension.

Holcomb signed an executive order that moves the state individual income tax filing deadline from April 15 to May 17.

The Internal Revenue Service announced the federal delay with the same dates last week. IRS officials said the move was needed to give taxpayers and the federal agency more breathing room to cope with changes brought on by the pandemic and affiliated rescue packages.

The federal government also extended the tax deadline last year when the pandemic hit. Indiana followed suit then, as well.

Holcomb’s executive order also extends the temporary licensing of health care workers for 90 days. That allows individuals who are not currently licensed to practice in Indiana, such as retired health care professionals, certain health care students and out-of-state health care professionals, to have a temporary license.

Holcomb initially granted the temporarily licensing at the beginning of the pandemic to help increase the number of available health care workers in the state.
