I recently was booked on a flight from Vancouver to Indianapolis, and my noon departure and 11:00pm arrival soon turned into flying the red eye from the west coast and getting to Indy 8 hours later. I suspect it was all because of a crew shortage that delayed the departure of the aircraft at the previous stop.
A little google searching turned up information about the Canadian Air Passenger Protection Act that guarantees compensation of $700 (CAN) for a arrival delayed by 6 to 9 hours. I took the time to mail a claim. I am not holding my breath, but that was a welcome relief to find out that if I was flying out of Canada, I might be compensated for my time and inconvenience.
