The Pull-A-Part auto salvage yard on the city’s northeast side is the first to be recognized as an "Indiana Clean Yard" since IDEM launched the program two years ago. The yard is part of Georgia-based chain with more than 20 locations.
IDEM says it worked with an industry group to develop standards that junkyards must meet to earn the recognition. The agency says junked vehicles can contain potential environmental hazards such as batteries, mercury switches, antifreeze and oil.
IDEM says Indiana has more than 650 auto salvage yards.
