Smolek is missing the fact that moratoriums remove the county from consideration by site selection persons. No one is asking for change because the county’s sites don’t make it past the initial screening. Zay – yes, this is new. Because most of these same legislators approved significant tax incentives for data centers in 2019 so Indiana became competitive with other states, but does anyone even want them?
Only problem with all this is the IEDC took off like kids in a free candy store and paid no attention to the massive needs for water and electricity, and rich farm land, to begin development of LEAP and data centers. Now the public is leery of it all and seem to have lost trust.
The state of Indiana passes special legislation to all but exempt data centers from paying taxes. No wonder nobody wants them. At least traditional power plants pay huge amounts of taxes.
Are these counties holding out for the comeback of steel mills and auto plants or are they planning on their future being supported by state bailouts?
