Auto parts distributor NAPA Balkamp plans to move its corporate headquarters from Indianapolis to the former Galyan’s Trading Co. headquarters building in Plainfield, taking 190 employees with it, the town of Plainfield announced Friday morning.

NAPA Balkamp, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Genuine Parts Co., has been based in a converted warehouse on South Holt Road on the southwest side of Indianapolis since 1993. The move should be completed by the end of the year.

NAPA Balkamp is expected to increase its operations and employment in Plainfield, town officials said. The company already has a distribution center in Plainfield at Airwest Business Park.

“Locating their headquarters here is a sign that they recognize Plainfield has the kind of amenities people are looking for,” said Robin Brandgard, town council president, in a written statement. “With their headquarters located in the Perry Crossing district, they’ll have housing, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment venues all within walking distance.”

The former Galyan’s headquarters building is at 2601 Stout Heritage Parkway west of the Indianapolis International Airport and south of the Shops at Perry Crossing.

Galyan’s, a locally based sporting goods chain, employed about 300 people at the Plainfield headquarters, but the company abandoned the building after it was purchased in 2004 by Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. Galyan's occupied the new building for less than a year.

The 100,000-square-foot building was partly occupied by former wireless-device distributor Brightpoint Inc. and Rolls-Royce Group from 2005 to 2008.

Formed in 1936, NAPA Balkamp purchases automotive parts from various manufacturers and redistributes them to NAPA warehouses.
