For the first time in its history, Ivy Tech Community College has ranked tops in the nation in private donations to community colleges, according to the Council for Aid to Education, a New York not-for-profit that conducts policy research on higher education.

Ivy Tech received $15.3 million last year from foundations, corporations and individuals.

The college wouldn’t break the figure down into specific gifts. But it said giving in general is on the rise and that the figure was not a spike due to an unusually large gift.

Foundations and organizations gave 40 percent of the total; corporations donated 22 percent; individuals outside Ivy Tech gave 22 percent; planned and deferred giving accounted for 11 percent; and employees contributed 5 percent.

About 38 percent of the contributions were spent on equipment for instruction, and 11 percent went for financial aid.
