For those that don’t know… there once was a vehicle called a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle). My girlfriend bought one late last year and it’s arguably the best one made. It’s a Chevy Volt, not to be confused by the ugly battery fire Bolt that GM is recalling. The PHEV models are the perfect cross platform for people (like us) that want full EV but can’t afford it, no high voltage home charging, or have range anxiety. It insane but most manufacturers are no longer building them! Its cheaper to buy one used and fill the tank when necessary. We live inside 465 and have filled the tank 5 times, total, since purchasing our used Volt. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is another great option. It’s a game changer that went unnoticed for years until Tesla hyped the EV market. Cheers.
The all or nothing approach for EV’s pushed by the manufacturers is nonsense. Don’t buy into it. As a multi-vehicle owner (gas and PHEV) I can tell you after 1 year of driving the Volt we will never go back. Our Volt averaged like 240 mpg at one point during the summer. I keep the other vehicles only because I enjoy them and need a truck to manage rental properties, but I don’t daily drive them anymore.
I’m still interested in where they are going to get the electricity. Also what happens when it runs out of juice in the middle of Nebraska in the middle of the night.
Why are inflated Union prices being rewarded with tax credits? The manufacturers will just inflate their price (bottom line) by the $7500 and then additional $4500.
Right now, if I am cutting it close and run out of fuel, I can call AAA and have a gallon or two of gasoline brought to me. How is that going to work with an EV? What if I run out of power on a hot day with my kids in the car? Am I going to be charged with neglect for having my kids in a hot car? Who is going to own all of these charging stations and is the electricity free? Are we going to have a government run utility? Or are they going to use tax $$ to build these charging stations and then “donate”them to local utility companies? It seems to me that the major electric utility companies would like to continue their legal monopolies and build these grids in their own service areas. What am I missing?
