It is beyond bizarre that a system that has maintained and improved school structures/property over many years is not allowed to sell them for market value when not needed. We ask the systems to be fiscally responsible and punish them when they try to do so.
Fiscally responsible? IPS? They receive $20K+ per student, per year. For what? With few but notable exceptions, it is a district made up of failure factories! With that amount of money, they would be better off sending their students to Disney World once each year and operating daycare for the remainder of the school year. They would have more to show for all that money than what they’re “accomplishing” now. Anything ANYTHING that can be done to try to turn those resources over to more responsible hands, is fiscally responsible. “Punishment” is what that school district is doing to those students. “It is beyond bizarre” that anyone familiar with the district’s outcomes would think otherwise.
GB L. –> This is especially true for districts outside of IPS. The $1 law is forcing districts to consider investing money in old buildings when it would be more cost effective to sell the old buildings (at market value) and build new facilities. If the buildings would be otherwise abandoned and the property not sellable (such as in some rural districts), then by all means sell them for $1; however, when the properties are worth millions, then the districts should be able to sell them and invest that money back into the schools.
