The bazooka sized hole is the false statement about exceptions at gun shows. To buy a gun from a dealer it requires a background check. Only sales between private individuals don’t require a check. The false rhetoric is the non-starter.
If you tell a lie often enough, people will start to believe it.
What number of mass shootings was the result of someone purchasing a gun at a gun show without a background check (illegal by the way)? Zero.
Why the push for this? Because oppressive gun control regulations start small until no lawful private citizen is able to own one to protect themselves.
The only ones with protection left will be those with private security and politicians. Unfortunately for ordinary citizens, the common street criminal has no problems still possessing illegal guns.
