In 2018, Westfield had a totem sign installed along U.S. 31 near 146th Street that says “Westfield” on both the north and south sides of the sign.

Denmark-based Vikan, a supplier of hygienic cleaning tools for the food and beverage industry, announced Monday that it plans to relocate the company’s North American headquarters from Zionsville to Westfield.

Vikan North America plans to spend $11.2 million to build an 80,000-square-foot warehouse and office facility that will house 56 employees at the southeast corner of East 196th Street and East Street at Westfield’s NorthPoint Business Park. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Vikan North America currently has 55,000 square feet of space at 4735 W. 106th St. in Zionsville. The new facility in Westfield will have 70,000 square feet of warehouse space and 10,000 square feet of office space, with room to expand.

Executive Vice President Rob Middendorf told IBJ that the new Westfield location will be in a more appropriate setting for the company.

“When we got to Westfield, in that specific kind of business park area, it felt right,” Middendorf said. “There’s a lot of large warehouses going up along I-65 and other areas, and that really didn’t feel right for our size and who we are. Those are more redistribution centers, and we’re really looking for our new North American home.”

Vikan North America was known as Remco Products Corp. until last November. Vikan was Remco’s largest supplier of color-coded tools for hygiene and safety in the food industry before Vikan purchased Remco in 2018.

Vikan was founded in 1898 by A.P. Pederson in Denmark. The company’s products are protected by international patents and include a line of brushes, brooms and squeegees. Vikan also produces a HyGo mobile cleaning station for cleanliness and efficiency in food production environments.

Westfield Mayor Scott Willis said Vikan North America’s facility will be the first North American headquarters of an international company in Westfield.

“This will be a unique piece to our commercial development in Westfield,” he said. “It’s cracking the ice for what we’ve been trying to build here. They don’t have to be headquarters, every company that comes in here. They are nice centerpieces to your community, especially because this is an international company based out of Europe, so it brings more international visibility to what we’re doing here.”

In 2018, South Bend-based Holladay Properties opened the 300-acre NorthPoint Business Park along U.S. 31 and East 196th Street. Its first tenant was Bastian Solutions, which moved into a 140,000-square-foot building. Gordon Food Service and Abbott Laboratories committed to moving into 500,000- and 120,000-square-foot buildings, respectively, the following year to round out the park’s “big three” occupants.

Westfield-based specialty contracting firm Browning Chapman opened a 65,000-square-foot office and warehouse building in NorthPoint in 2019.

Last year, members of the Westfield City Council approved Holladay’s plan to build NorthPoint II, a 180-acre expansion northeast of the existing business park.
