Another example of totally inept city leadership. Many of downtown’s problems can be traced back to not enforcing curfews on minors. What the hell is a 16 year-old with a gun doing out at 2 AM in the middle of the city. This lack of enforcement is one of the main reasons for the closure of Circle Center Mall. You elect crappy politicians and you’re going to get crappy results. Fortunately, I don’t live in Marion County any longer and rarely go downtown.
You’re right John…being that Pothole Joe is a Democrat as is most of the City Council. You get what you elect!
No politician can fix the crappy parenting letting kids with guns loose on our streets when the super stupid super majority removes regulations on guns .
Circle Center wasn’t going to make it even if we had something better than a comatose mayor (we don’t).
I’m not saying Team Hogsett did anything to help the situation, but Circle Center was declining before he took office. Even cities with relatively low crime rates (there aren’t many) have kissed their downtown malls goodbye in the last decade, and frankly, the ones out in the suburbs (where crime is often still quite low) aren’t faring so great either.
Have any data to back up your claim that lack of enforcement is one of the main reasons for the closure of Circle Center? If not, claim it as you opinion rather than asserting it as an objective fact.
Like many urban malls (Columbus, OH and Minneapolis are just two comparable examples), Circle Centre has been slowly declining since online shopping became the norm and major retailers drastically reduced the number of storefronts they maintained. See studies at: https://camoinassociates.com/resources/the-american-shopping-mall-part-1/
The planned redevelopment of the Circle Centre space space holds the potential to once again have it be a prominent venue for downtown residents and visitors.
Charles, so silly. If guns are the problem, why isn’t Greenwood getting shot up every weekend. More guns on the hips and in the cars than Indianapolis. Hmmmm maybe it something else.
You’re wrong Charles B. Our local politicians can do something about this juvenile crime wave, but won’t because they’re afraid it will offend the black community in Indy, their voting base. Gun laws have absolutely nothing to do with crime, particularly juvenile crime. Juveniles & others with criminal records cannot legally buy firearms, and when these punks are arrested they need to be prosecuted and thrown in the slammer, with extra time for gun charges. That’s how you get these low life’s off the street. Until the culture is changed/corrected, we need to restore law & order to our communities.
in a country where there are more guns than people and buying firearms is so easy that it doesn’t really make any difference whether it’s legal or not.
I would agree that enforcing curfew laws in the Mile Square might make sense but stomping people because they look young is almost as bad as stopping people because of their skin color and has to be done very carefully with very specific policies to keep our police force from looking like racist thugs.
Dan M. I grew up in Indianapolis and I don’t remember my parents allowing me to hang out anywhere, including downtown, at 2 AM, let along with a firearm! We’re experiencing a breakdown with the foundation of our society – the family, and too many of our politicians could care less. I don’t know how we put this terrible genie back in the bottle, but ignoring this problem is not the answer.
