Cummins Inc. on Thursday announced a shuffle in the senior executive ranks that will result in a vice chairman and a new president and chief operating officer at the Indiana-based engine manufacturer.
Tony Satterthwaite, president and COO since October 2019, will move into the new position of vice chairman, effective March 1.
Jennifer Rumsey, president of the company’s Components business, will succeed Satterthwaite as president and COO.
Satterthwaite joined Cummins in 1988 in product planning and sales. He was Distribution business president from 2015 to 2019 and led Cummins’ Power Generation business unit from 2008 to 2015.
“I am thrilled to have Tony join the chairman’s office and confident he’s the right leader for this role, given the significant opportunities in front of us,” said Cummins Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger in written comments. “Tony understands our business at all levels and has a truly global view, having lived for extensive periods in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. He’s a well-respected leader, strategist, mentor and thinker and an asset to our company.”
Satterthwaite received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Stanford University.
Rumsey joined Cummins in 2000 in controls and has held a variety of roles at Cummins in advanced engineering, product development and quality. She has served as vice president of engineering for the Engine business and chief technical officer for Cummins. She was named president of the Components business in 2019.
“Technology is evolving more rapidly now than at any other time in history and Jen’s extensive technical experience and leadership make her ideal for the role of president and chief operating officer,” Linebarger said. “Jen has served in a variety of business and technical leadership positions at Cummins and has been incredibly successful in every role. She has been instrumental in developing some of the most important products and technologies Cummins has created.”
Rumsey received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a master’s in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Columbus-based Cummins employs almost 58,000 people worldwide. It earned about $1.8 billion on sales of $19.8 billion in 2020.
Cummins shares were down 0.7% Thursday morning, to $243.40 each.
