Greenwood manufacturer to close facility, lay off 72 workers

Greenwood-based Nachi America Inc., a manufacturer of machine tools, hydraulics, specialty steel and other products, is planning to close its Nachi Technology Inc. facility in the Johnson County city.

In a notice to the state, the company said the closure will result in employment terminations for 72 workers.

Nachi America operates three facilities in Greenwood, although only one—located at 713 Pushville Road—is being closed, according to a spokesperson. The facility manufactures automotive bearings.

In an email to Inside INdiana Business, the spokesperson said the move is a strategic adjustment to the company’s business structure as part of ongoing efforts to optimize operations.

“This includes relocating certain operations to better align with our evolving needs,” the spokesperson said. “While these decisions are never easy, they are made with careful consideration to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and continued growth. We remain committed to supporting our employees during this transition and maintaining a strong presence in Greenwood.”

In a notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the company said three employees will be let go on May 31, with the remainder being let go on Dec. 31.

Nachi said the affected employees are not represented by a union and do not have bumping rights.

The spokesperson said the company is working with the DWD to utilize its Rapid Response program, which offers various services, including job-placement assistance, career counseling, resume-writing workshops, and training opportunities to help the affected workers transition to new employment.

Nachi said it will still employ about 200 people at its remaining facilities after the closure is completed.

Nachi America is the North American corporate headquarters for Japan-based Nachi-Fujikoshi Corp. In addition to its Indiana operations, Nachi America has facilities in California, Florida and Michigan, as well as Mexico and Canada.
