An Indiana-based hotel group has submitted plans to the city of Westfield to build its second hotel along U.S. 31 in Hamilton County.

Bloomington-based KPM Hotel Group wants to build a 144-room Element by Westin hotel on the northwest quadrant of the intersection of U.S. 31 and 191st Street.

Kelly Mulder, a partner at KPM, told members of the Westfield City Council on Monday night that the six-story hotel would feature a 2,000-square-foot meeting space, a lobby bar and an outdoor pool.

KPM opened a 150-room SpringHill Suites by Marriott hotel in 2019 in the Chatham Commons development adjacent to where the company wants to build the Element extended-stay hotel.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide established the Element brand in 2006. The extended-stay hotel line and about 30 other hotel brands became part of Marriott International in 2016 when Marriott purchased Starwood for $13.3 billion.

“We’re excited for the location,” Mulder said. “It’s our goal to bring these two together and get a lot of synergies between the two brands collectively here in the city. Then we would have about 300 Marriott rooms in one location, and we think there’s a lot of strength that comes out of that.”

KPM also operates a SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Bloomington at 501 N. College Ave.

If the Element by Westin receives approval from the Westfield City Council and is constructed, it would be the first extended-stay hotel in the city of Westfield.

As Westfield has grown and become a tourist destination thanks to Grand Park Sports Campus, city leaders have put a focus on attracting more hotels to the city. A boutique hotel is included in plans for a planned downtown development called Park & Poplar, and South Korea-based Lotte has submitted plans to the city to build a $50 million, 215-room L7 Westfield hotel in the Lantern Commons development near the intersection of U.S. 31 and 161st Street.

The Westfield Advisory Plan Commission will hold a public hearing for the Element by Westin hotel project on April 7 and a workshop on May 19. The Plan Commission could vote on a recommendation on June 2 and the project could return to the City Council on June 9 for a final vote.
