This is insane when murder in Indianapolis is at an all time high. Fortunately it looks as if the Senate vote is not “veto proof”, so it’s up to the governor to heed his Chief’s words.
Doesn’t a veto in Indiana only require a simple majority? But, if the session is over, I’d presume they wouldn’t have any opportunity to override a veto, right?
If the gov does nothing it becomes law in 7 days. He doesn’t have to sign it.
Paul, you’re right. It’s the quorum requirement that’s 2/3. Veto override is only a majority.
Good to hear. The criminals already disregard the carry permit requirement. The only people not carrying guns because of the permit requirement are those who obey the laws. The people who obey the laws are exactly whom we should want carrying the guns. At least level the playing field – especially “when murder in Indianapolis is at an all time high.” There are still protections in place to keep certain people from buying guns. And, it’s illegal to purchase a gun for someone who cannot legally buy. So, the argument that this will cause a proliferation of guns is disingenuine. And, FWIW, the gun permit process took more than 6 months in 2020 and had additional, unnecessary hoops (compared to the first carry permit I had from IN). We should not gloss over what the government is doing to the citizenry by saying the process takes “weeks.”
Do you really need a gun (hand gun)? Does one really think that “open carry” with holsters and duals in the streets is the way to advance society? One needs a permit to fish and go boating, but not to carry a weapon that can take someone’s life? I feel bad for people who do not want to be finger printed to get a gun permit. Such a hardship. These same people do not use touch id on their cells phones or banking apps for fear of……..well just fear. But carrying a gun makes them fearless. More guns, more shooting, more deaths. Its a straight line.
Poor baby.
Fishing and boating are not addressed in the US or state constitutions. Most people I know carry firearms for personal protection.
The 19 year old who recently opened fire on the basketball court at the Jewish Community Center was apparently insulted and angry at a persistent trash-talker. Impulse-control is often difficult– especially for young men and especially in our confrontational culture. It’s hard to see how public safety would be served by making it legal for anyone (excluding prohibited persons) to carry a loaded handgun w/o some form of reasonable regulatory authorization.
Was the JCC shooter legally permitted to possess his firearm? Who did he purchase it from?
Silly me, why would I think the legislature should defer to the groups that not only have the most knowledge/experience on this issue, but literally live and die protecting them. Of course those groups would be the The Indiana State Police, the state’s Fraternal Order of Police and Police Chief’s Association who all strongly object to it. The NRA sure has a big back pocket that is full of our super majority legislature.
Vested doesn’t equate to most knowledgeable or experienced.
The organizations you cited are experts in law enforcement procedures. A large segment of the citizenry have adequate to extensive experience and knowledge of firearms by other means. (Military veterans, hunters, firearms enthusiasts, etc) The majority of law abiding citizens support the constitutional carry policy. If think otherwise please show evidence of it.

The idea that the government cannot restrict guns in any way is very recent. From the 2008 Supreme Court case, DC vs. Heller:
“Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. “
That was written by noted flaming liberal justice … checks notes … Scalia.
I have no issues with trained, licensed people who know how to use guns carrying them. We are long past that point.
hmm, don’t you need to go through a metal detector at the state house? Isn’t that an infringement on my 2nd amendment rights? Why do these legislators thinks it is so important to open carry without permit as long as it isn’t near them?
The perimeter extends far before the detector.

The General Assembly returns to the Statehouse in May for a technical corrections day. It can override vetoes during this session.
Here’s a question. Since there will not be a “permit”, what does this do to carry permit reciprocity with other states?
Nothing. You have to read each other state’s laws for reciprocity but you’ll find probably in 100% of cases that a license or permit is required by the other state for reciprocity purposes.
Why would another State that has permit requirements accept a permit issued by any State the does not require gun permits ?
Are all charges and convictions for carrying a hand gun without a valid permit going to get dropped and expunged from the criminal record system now that a permit is no longer required ?
I doubt our doofus gun nut legislators even thought about how this law would affect prior charges and convictions.
