7 thoughts on “IUPUI realignment could bring big benefits to Indy businesses and economy

  1. I’m still puzzled as to why people expect all these new opportunities for research and research funding once the campus is drawn and quartered to appease the interests of the two “main” campuses. Why haven’t these opportunities existed before now? Well, I think they have, as the Luddy School of Informatics demonstrates. If you build it, or had built it before now, they would come. But for some reason, for the most part it wasn’t built or funded. Unlike IPFW, which had few foreign students, IUPUI has a foreign student contingent, spread across IU and Purdue schools. Me thinks, as a graduate of the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts, the pandemic showed the lords of Bloomington and West Lafayette that remote education is possible for many courses, and that for many more the Indianapolis campus was a perfectly fine alternative to years of expensive education in the hinterlands. Maybe, just maybe, intercollegiate sports teams aren’t really enough to get students to pay more for the same degrees. Besides, you can see them on TV, or drive to a game if you really want.

So, before that revolution got completely out of hand, the two decided to cut off IUPUI from further expansion of its distinct identity and bona fides, and reassert the dominance of the “main campuses” before IUPUI, while denied the moniker U of I, found some other way of further establishing itself separate from the shadows cast by Bloomington and West Lafayette. I bet now IU regrets building dorms at IUPUI…

  2. Can we please recognize that IUPUI + IU School of Medicine is a de facto R1 university? Everyone is making a very big deal about a labeling technicality. The money, jobs, research activity, and degrees granted are all here, already generating serious economic activity in Indy. By all means, let’s pursue loftier goals for the entire enterprise, but please just recognize that Indy already has a major research university.

  3. I’ve never understood why Indianapolis has not taken a more aggressive approach towards developing IUPUI in a high level research facility.
    long ago.

    1. Because it would have upset the balance of power. For the most part, outside the medical fields, the goal has been to keep IUPUI a notch or two below the main campuses, lest students and grant providers come to recognize they could be studying and spending money, respectively, in Indy and not heading to the country side. While in theory IUPUI is an IU “core” campus, along with Bloomington, that has never been the case in practice.

  4. I’m still trying to understand what is actually happening here. I graduated from IUPUI in 1999 . My computer technology degree was from Purdue (says Purdue not iupui on my certificate). I got a As in business and it’s from IU. Back in 1999, all my classes for computer technology was ran by Purdue in their own buildings on campus… My business classes was in mainly IU buildings.

    1. No degree ever had IUPUI on it. It was always an IU or Purdue degree. IUPUI had no school in its own name to award degrees. That was the goal of lobbying by students and faculty during the 70’s and early 80’s, who felt no connection with Bloomington or West Lafayette and wanted to chart a new path in high level academic achievement at reduced costs.

What is changing is there will no longer be an IUPUI. IU had administrative responsibility for IUPUI, though Purdue was responsible for the academic side of its schools.

Purdue believes it will have more opportunities to expand in Indy if its not part of IUPUI. IU seems to think it will expand in Indy if it doesn’t have the PU of IUPUI, and is just IUI. The only change I’ve noted so far is IU will take over Science, which at IUPUI is a Purdue School, and Purdue will keep computer tech, but the Computer Informatics and non-coding computer classes will stay with IU Luddy. I suspect the IU School of Liberal Arts, which only exists in Indy will be merged into the IU School of Arts and Sciences, as is done at Bloomington and the satellite campuses.
IU and Purdue have committed to a new combined research program in medical sciences, but this could have easily been done as part of IUPUI. I suspect turf wars kept it from happening…

At the end of the day, the dream of Mayor Hudnut and thousands of Central Indiana business folks and students of a major university in Indianapolis not part of IU or Purdue, is being killed off. In the mid-80’s one of many blows was struck when Indiana Central became U of I, after years of lobbying by students to have IUPUI take that name and be an independent university. We’ll see what happens…I suspect little. Things will keep on the same path, with the primary focus on Bloomington and West Lafayette, and Indy, outside of the Medical and Dental Schools, left to chart a course as second tier to the home campuses.
