  1. The story says that Shanelle King’s lease was being canceled seven months early without any explanation. It would’ve been nice if the story dug into that a little further and got comments from experts on whether that is legal. I understand evictions being necessary sometimes, but those go through a court to ensure fairness, or least legality. If King’s account is accurate, what good is signing a lease if the landlord can just cancel it for no reason? Are landlords now writing in clauses that allow them to cancel leases without cause?

    1. That is not legal in Indiana the most landlord friendly state in the union, not sure how it would be legal in GA. I would guess either the resident is lying or they do not understand the documents they signed or they have broken the clauses of the lease so badly it allows for the contract to be nullified without an eviction.

    2. @Paul, “journalists” always have a predetermined agenda and never let facts get in the way. Someone not paying rent for months is completely ignored (BTW Shanelle, it’s not “your” home) and magically there is a $15k handout the day before eviction, but of course the landlord who has incurred expense all along and not been paid is the bad guy, which is what was the “journalist’s” intent all along.

    3. The landlord got the $15k in rental assistance through the tenant. The landlord is now evicting the tenant so they can double-dip by getting a new tenant and hold the rental assistance money. The landlord is ABSOLUTELY the bad guy here.

    4. AT how is the landlord the bad guy here? The $15,000 that they received is to make up for past due rent that they have not had during the pandemic. But yet there were still expect to continue making mortgage payments and paying taxes on the property. Most landlords are not renewing leases because they know they can get quite a bit more now and who blames them because that’s the American way is to make money

  2. The money was a band-aid, not an excuse not to find employment. There is the underlying issue. Many, not all, took the hand out and sat on their rears. Others took it as a way to stay on their feet and are gainfully employed. Taxpayer dollars have been funding the lazy the past couple of years and I imagine the landlords are tired of it. Pay your rent or move out. The taxpayers paid the first $15K, now its time to pay your share again.

    1. Just because the only thing you can think to do with free rent money is sit around and collect un-employment, does not mean that is the actual narrative for most of these people. This program was a life saver for lots of Americans, and protecting these people so that they could contribute to the economy when things turned around is what helped contribute to the near record US GDP.

    2. @Dan Shanelle’s “work dried up during the pandemic” is laughable. She is a hairdresser. Yes, she was prevented from working due to lockdowns for a couple months early 2020. That was 20 months ago. She was also eligible to collect $1000 a week in unemployment for most of 2020. Hairdressers have been business as usual for well over a year now, and of course countless other jobs available to her. Tell me why she isn’t paying rent. She is the furthest thing from “contributing to the GNP” and just a professional victim.

  3. As a landlord my self I feel for these stories but I also understand the basics required to operate a successful rental property. If someone is unemployed (for months) and not paying rent a government program means NOTHING> I’d help my tenants complete forms and get assistance but after that I literally don’t care what the government does. It’s a business, not a handout. Would you risk losing your property to let someone live for free? Didn’t think so.

  4. No mention if the $15,000 covers ALL rent and legal expenses incurred by the landlord to catch up the tenant. If the tenant is still behind in rent owed…the landlord has every right to evict the non-paying tenant. A rental agreement is easy to understand…YOU PAY/YOU STAY….YOU DON’T/YOU GO.
