Not surprising. These types of drugs have alot of side effects. More lawsuits to follow. Maybe people should eat better and stay away from high fructose corn syrup.
How long do you have to be vomiting to loose teeth? Did she forget to mention that to her doctor? Did she think it was “normal”?
I’m sorry, but if start taking a drug and I have side effects, I mention it to my doctor. I’ve even stopped taking medication after consulting with my doctor.
All drugs have side effects and those listed are in the prescribing information. Not all side effects are evident in studies used for drug approval due the relatively small numbers of subjects studied. The post-marketing population is much larger and diverse. That is why post-marketing surveillance some times uncovers previously unrecognized side effects of low frequency and high severity or new populations more at risk for some specific side effects.
Every one of these issues the patient had is listed as a side effect on both of these drugs. Like Dan said above, how long did she take it before alerting anyone? I mean, seriously? And Clark B, with Type 2 diabetes, most people can’t just ‘eat better and avoid corn syrup.’ Please do some research.
I think that an additional dimension to this challenge is the consideration how prescribers are counseling the patients who are receiving these medications. I have participated in 9 clinical trials in this new area of obesity research. This is most research experience of any physician in our State. In a clinical trial, there is a research team (physician, research study coordinator, dietitian, etc.) who coach the patients though the GI problems as they might arise over time. There are frequent office visits and phone calls to minimize any side effects to the patients. Every patient’s response is different and overall support is customize to minimize the known side effects of this class of medication. I suspect that as the drugs have received FDA approval for weight loss, the physicians who are doing the prescribing may not know how to best counsel patients. As a result, patients suffer. unfortunately. Prescribers need to do more homework before using these obesity drug from this class of medications. Currently, the only two FDA approved medications in this class are Wegovy and Saxenda. Phillip D. Toth, MD, FACP.
