The Indianapolis-based Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention announced Monday the first recipients for a portion of the $1.25 million it received from the Bezos Day 1 Family Fund in 2020 to reduce family homelessness.

Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis and The Learning Tree each will receive $130,000 from CHIP. In April, CHIP put out a request for proposals to help homeless families in Indianapolis, and a committee selected the two projects.

The 2022 Indianapolis point-in-time count showed a 27% increase in the number of households with children experiencing homelessness.

“These grants come at a critical time when we are seeing an increase in homelessness for families with minor children and when inflation and lack of affordable housing are significantly impacting families,” said Chelsea Haring-Cozzi, executive director of CHIP in a press release. “The Day 1 Families Fund is providing catalytic funding needed to help divert families from shelter and to reduce barriers to housing for families for families currently in shelter.”

The first allocation of the grant created by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will allow Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis to expand its apartment shelter program and support The Learning Tree’s tenant advocacy program.
