Only one other area of the country saw its unemployment rate jump faster in June than the Elkhart and Goshen region in northern Indiana, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Elkhart’s rate shot up 2.8 percentage points, to 7 percent, from June last year.

That rise tied with identical increases in Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla.; and Longview, Wash. El Centro, Calif., topped the list of places with the greatest increases, with a gain of 5.5 percentage points.

The Elkhart area has been decimated with a string of layoffs in its core industries of recreational vehicle and manufactured housing.

The figures released today are preliminary and subject to revision. The numbers also are not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, so are best compared to the same month in prior years.
