Indiana University officials didn’t have to look far for the new CEO of IU’s Research & Technology Corp.

Named to the position late last week, Tony Armstrong has a history with the corporation dating back more than a decade. He was its associate director from 1997 to 2000 and has led the organization on an interim basis since early April.

He takes the helm of an institution charged with overseeing the Emerging Technologies Center, the small-business incubator on the Central Canal downtown.

Armstrong replaces Mark Long, who left in March and now operates his own economic development consultancy, Long Performance Advisors Inc. in Greenwood. The town of Fishers recently hired Long to help it start a high-tech campus for startup companies.

Armstrong’s experience with startups includes the time he spent from 2000 to 2005 at the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund, the state’s program for investing in budding high-tech firms. He served as executive director part of that time.

In 2005, Gov. Mitch Daniels appointed him deputy director of the Indiana State Budget Agency, a position he held until February, when he left to become IU’s executive director of engagement.

Armstrong said one of his priorities is to determine if IURTC is fully serving all IU’s faculty and staff researchers. The Emerging Technologies Center is home to 25 companies that occupy roughly 44,000 square feet. It has been operating at full capacity the past two years and typically has a waiting list.
