The online retailer will donate 75 cents to $1 per item wrapped by volunteers
Nov. 30 through Dec. 23.
Charitable organizations could earn a few hundred dollars, or a few thousand, depending
on the number of volunteers they send, and how fast those hands wrap.
Amazon, which trains the volunteers, says
they can usually wrap 12 to 15 items per hour. Charities are allowed to send teams of four to 30 people, who may work shifts
of five to 10 hours.The pay is 75 cents per item during day shifts, and $1 during the overnight shift, from midnight to 6
a.m.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and able to stand at a wrapping table for the entire shift.
About 25 groups have already signed up to participate this year, communications manager Michele Glisson said. The Seattle-based
company donates a portion of its regular gift-wrapping revenue; there is no additional charge to customers, she said.
Amazon.com’s gift-wrapping prices range from $3.99 per compact disc to $5.99 for large items.•
