IBJ was named third-best large-market business publication and collected six other awards at the Alliance of Area Business Publications’ summer conference June 21 in Charleston, S.C.

IBJ has been in the top three in the best newspaper category for the last three years, including winning the gold in 2007.

Judges from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism evaluated 717 entries from 47 publications, including papers in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. All told, 99 gold, silver or bronze awards were handed out.

In awarding IBJ the bronze for best newspaper, judges wrote: “A newspaper that provides a good mix of stories, both in-depth and quick-hit reads. Front pages are filled with newsy stories
with well-crafted leads, good writing and solid headlines. The solid design helps readers navigate the publication.”

IBJ’s other prizes:

Gold. Best body of work by a writer, Cory Schouten.

Gold: Best staff-generated blog, Property Lines, which is written by Schouten.

Gold. Best personality profile, for Anthony Schoettle’s profile of Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian.

Silver. Best feature layout for “A familiar face-and
then some,” an end-of-year feature designed by Brad Turner that used paper dolls to introduce Mayor-elect Greg Ballard to readers.

Bronze. Best print scoop for Schouten’s story on the Venu development proposed for the Keystone at the Crossing area.

Bronze. Best online scoop for Schouten’s story on the $480 million Legends District-SoDo project proposed for south of downtown.

Los Angeles-based AABP is a national organization representing 74 independent magazine and newspaper members in the United States, Canada and Australia.
