Indianapolis-based Harlan Laboratories Inc. has named Hans Thunem as its new CEO, it announced Friday morning.

The contract research company, which focuses on animal testing for experimental drugs, employs 2,800 people and has offices in 12 countries. As of 2008, it employed 300 workers in Indianapolis.

Thunem was previously Harlan’s president of research models and services. Before he came to Harlan, Thunem was CEO at Lifelabs, a medical diagnostics provider in Canada.

“The current marketplace is challenging, but I’m optimistic about what can be achieved with more than 2,800 highly motivated people pulling in the same direction,” Thunem said in a prepared statement.

Thunem holds a master’s degree in health sciences from the University of Toronto and a bachelor's degree in life sciences from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

Harlan’s previous CEO was Steve Sullivan, who joined Harlan from Covance Inc. in 2006. Sullivan stepped down in December. Paul Clark had been serving as interim CEO until Thunem’s promotion.
