State Fair executive director Cindy Hoye says the crowds were wonderful for the event that ended Sunday, especially considering
the hot weather.
Fair officials say temperatures reached at least 92 degrees during nine of the fair's 17 days. The fair's attendance
fell short of the nearly 974,000 people it saw last year when it was first extended from 12 days.
Hoye says fair organizers don't have enough information yet to know about the future of the longer fair, although they
are committed to the longer scheduled for next year.
Earlier this month, IBJ talked with fair vendors who likewise were unsure about
the benefit of the additional five days. Despite the higher total attendance last year, daily crowds were down from an average
of 71,634 in 2008 to 57,288 in 2009.
