Longtime Indiana Congressman Dan Burton says he plans to seek election to a 16th term next year after narrowly surviving tough Republican primary battles in his past two campaigns.

The 5th District that Burton first won in 1982 remains heavily Republican under the redistricting plan approved this spring by state legislators. It will include all of Hamilton County and the north side of Indianapolis, but loses some rural counties closer to Fort Wayne that Burton carried on his way to winning the 2008 and 2010 primaries.

The 72-year-old Burton told WIBC-FM that he still feels young and vigorous, and is ready for a fight.

Burton won with 30 percent of the vote in a crowded 2010 Republican primary in which rivals argued it was time for him to go.
