The Buchanan Group, the Indianapolis-based owner and operator of Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers, said Tuesday that it has acquired Scottsburg-based Fewell Enterprises Inc., one of the state’s largest granite memorial manufacturing and finishing companies, for $3.5 million.
“Fewell is roughly four times the size of our own Millennium Monument Co., so this is a major transaction for us,” said Bruce Buchanan, Flanner and Buchanan principal.
Fewell employs 28 and has customers in two-thirds of the country, from Florida to Colorado. Its customer base includes granite dealers who work with local funeral homes to design and deliver memorials, using laser designs.
“We plan to continue investing in and expanding the business at Scottsburg to increase our capacity and broaden the customer base,” Buchanan said. “We will integrate Fewell with our own Millennium Company.
Through its Private Label Casket Division, Flanner and Buchanan already serves many funeral service companies across the country. It reached a milestone in July by delivering its 15,000th casket.
The Buchanan Group and its associated companies are owned and operated by Bruce and Brian Buchanan, who represent the fourth generation of ownership. They recently celebrated the 130th anniversary of the company.
Before the acquisition, the company had 150 employees.
