Brooks wins GOP nod for retiring Burton’s seat

Former U.S. Attorney Susan Brooks has won the Republican nomination for the 5th congressional district seat in central Indiana that retiring GOP Rep. Dan Burton is giving up after 30 years.

Brooks narrowly beat out former Congressman David McIntosh in a field of eight Republicans in Tuesday's primary. She'll face Democratic state Rep. Scott Reske, who won his party's nomination.

Brooks was the top federal prosecutor for Indiana's southern district under President George W. Bush and was a deputy mayor for former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith.

Reske is a retired Marine Corps Reserves colonel who was deployed to Iraq. He was first elected to the state Legislature in 2002 but decided to not seek re-election after Republicans put his home in a heavily GOP district.
