The city's Metropolitan Development Commission on Feb. 20 approved a Wisconsin developer's plan for a $30 million apartment and retail project to be built on the site of the former Woodfield Centre retail strip at 86th Street and Keystone Avenue.

The proposal from Hendricks Commercial Properties calls for 36,000 square feet of ground-level retail space and 120 high-end apartments. It had met resistance from the Nora-Northside Community Council, which objected to the building's height and its closeness to 86th Street.

Dubbed Ironworks at Keystone Village, the project should come out of the ground this year if the City-County Council approves the plans at its March 25 meeting, said Mike Young, the local attorney representing Hendricks.

Young said the vacant Woodfield Centre was demolished in the last 30 days.
