Greenwood-based Indiana American provides service to about 290,000 customers throughout Indiana, including parts of central Indiana. Sessions are planned for April 8 in Franklin and April 10 in Gary.
The Office of Utility Consumer Counselor says Indiana American wants state approval to raise rates to cover projects such as replacement of aging mains, treatment plant projects and storage tank renovation.
For most of the utility's residential customers using 5,000 gallons per month, the monthly water bill would rise from $37.35 to $39.75.
If approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, Indiana American's proposal would raise its total annual operating revenues by $19.6 million.
Indiana American's rates have increased twice since their approval in 2012 to cover aging infrastructure.
The company is an arm of American Water Works Co., headquartered in Voorhees, N.J. It operates in 15 states and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
