The northeastern Indiana Republican first elected in 2010 is a tea party favorite and one of the more conservative Republicans of the U.S. House. His entry Thursday came amid the shake-up in congressional leadership following House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's surprise primary defeat on Tuesday.
Cantor's defeat has led House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California to launch a bid for majority leader. Stutzman is running against Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois and Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana for the position McCarthy is vacating.
Votes for majority leader and majority whip are set for Thursday.
Stutzman, 37, is a fourth-generation farmer. He and family members, including his father, run a farm of 4,000 acres and grow soybeans, green beans and seed corn.
A member of the Financial Services Committee, Stutzman often has pushed for an uncompromising approach on the GOP agenda.
