Subscribe NowMike Chappell, who spent 30 years as a sportswriter with The Indianapolis Star before resigning Monday, has joined WRTV-TV Channel 6 as a writer and commentator, the station announced Tuesday morning.
Chappell, who has covered the Indianapolis Colts for the Star since the team arrived from Baltimore in 1984, was inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in April.
He will continue to provide Colts coverage at WRTV as an online writer and on newscasts. He’ll also be involved with the station’s new weekly mobile-cast, “Horse Play,” which will be streamed live on Mondays at 12:30 p.m.
"Mike will be a great addition to our sports team covering the Colts," WRTV General Manager Larry Blackerby said in a written statement. "His experience and knowledge of the Colts enhances our strength as Indiana's No. 1 digital choice for news, weather and sports."
Chappell, who announced his departure from the Star early last week, is among a flurry of sportswriters who have recently left the newspaper, which is reducing its staff prior to moving into a new downtown headquarters in Circle Centre mall in late September.
Veteran writers Phil Richards and Mark Ambrogi recently took buyouts from the Star after three decades with the paper. Longtime columnist Bob Kravitz resigned in mid-August to take a job with WTHR-TV Channel 13. Phillip Wilson, who spent more than 20 years at the Star, resigned in early August to join Scout.com.
Former Indiana Pacers beat writer Mike Wells left the paper to join ESPN in August 2013, shortly after longtime Indiana University beat writer Terry Hutchens departed to join Fox Sports.
