DePauw University in Greencastle has announced a campaign to raise $300 million for its academic programs, financial aid, student preparation and campus improvements.

The university announced the campaign Friday evening and said it already had raised more than $200 million toward the goal.

DePauw says the campaign aims to raise $100 million in new endowment for need-based financial aid and $25 million for a program to prepare students for a rapidly changing and entrepreneurial music industry.

The university says other funds would be used to renovate its main library, to complete a dining facility, to create a center for student engagement to prepare them for life after college, and to pay for improvements to athletics and recreational sites.

Over the weekend, another private university in Indiana, the University of Notre Dome, celebrated its own big fundraising score. It honored two couples who donated a combined $45 million that's funding construction of a new campus research facility, the 220,000-square-foot McCourtney Hall.

The three-story building will boast 100,000 square feet of laboratory and work spaces and will be named for alumnus Ted H. McCourtney and his wife, Tracy, who donated $35 million for the new building.

Alumnus Thomas J. Crotty Jr. and his wife, Shari, gave the school another $10 million for the new research building.
