Indiana University Health announced Tuesday it will appoint Dr. Paul Haut as interim president of its Riley Hospital for Children on April 17, when the hospital’s current CEO departs for a job in Seattle.

IU Health also will conduct a search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Jeff Sperring, who announced March 5 that he will leave to become CEO of Seattle Children’s Hospital in May.

Haut is currently chief medical officer at Riley Hospital, which has 430 beds and sees about 11,000 patients stay overnight each year. He became chief medical officer in early 2012, after the position was vacated by Sperring when he became CEO.

“Drs. Sperring and Haut will work closely together to assure a stable transition that will ensure our continued commitment to excellence in patient care,” said Dennis Murphy, IU Health’s chief operating officer, in a memo sent Tuesday to IU Health employees.

Haut has a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He specializes in pediatric hematology and oncology.
