WLFI-TV Channel 16 reported Thursday that both Caterpillar, Inc. and Oerlikon Fairfield are reducing their staff.
Peoria, California-based Caterpillar, Inc. confirmed its plans to lay off 50 full-time production employees and about 200 agency workers at its Lafayette plant by June. Employees were notified of the layoffs Wednesday.
The construction machinery and equipment company says the reduction in employment stems from a decrease in orders for engines that support the oil and gas industry.
Lafayette-based Oerlikon Fairfield, owned by Swiss-based Oerlikon AG, told the news station that it's letting go of 35 full-time employees, effective Friday, due to general business conditions.
The engineering gear and drive product manufacturer employs about 1,000 people at its U.S. headquarters in Lafayette.
