IBJ won the national general excellence award for weeklies from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers late last month, beating out fellow finalists Advertising Age and the Portland Business Journal.

Judges wrote: “The IBJ’s innovation and moxie shot it to the top of this competitive category over publications with more resources.” Judges praised the depth and range of news stories as well as last September’s Interview Issue and its collection of “diverse and edgy” interviews.

IBJ beat out more than 20 other entrants from around the country for the award, which was handed out April 25 at SABEW’s spring conference in Chicago. Fellow general excellence winners included The Wall Street Journal (daily newspapers) and Bloomberg News (news agencies).

At the awards ceremony, IBJ health care reporter J.K. Wall was named a finalist in the breaking news category for his story that first reported that Indiana University Health planned to close one of its downtown hospitals.

IBJ also picked up four awards on April 24 from the Indiana professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, including the prestigious First Amendment award.

That prize went to IBJ government reporter Kathleen McLaughlin for her dogged pursuit of documents the city had withheld related to its plan to build a $1.6 billion justice center.

Also receiving SPJ awards were IBJ A&E Editor Lou Harry for arts and entertainment coverage and IBJ sports columnist Mike Lopresti for sports column writing. In addition, the newspaper was honored for outstanding business or consumer affairs coverage.•
