The inventory from 20 closed Hallmark stores throughout the state will be sold at auction July 23.

The stores were owned by a single franchisee and closed between early May and late June, according to a spokesman for Indianapolis-based Key Auctioneers, which is conducting the sale.

Available items include greeting cards as well as collectibles, decorative items, furniture, and display cases and cabinets. Collectibles include name brands such as Disney, Hello Kitty, Precious Moments, Willow Tree and Peanuts.

In the metropolitan area, stores under The Wooden Key group owned by James and Jennifer Sinclair of Carmel closed in Indianapolis, Avon, Brownsburg, Carmel, Lebanon, Noblesville, Plainfield and Shelbyville.

The store closings come as Hallmark consolidates operations across the country as the greeting card industry struggles to stay relevant in the digital age.

Kansas City, Missouri-based Hallmark announced Tuesday that it will close its distribution center in Enfield, Connecticut, and cut 570 jobs there.

The company in the past five years has slashed its worldwide workforce by half, from 22,000 to 10,500.

Key Auctioneers will conduct the sale at its office at 5520 S. Harding St., beginning at 10 a.m. Online bidding also will be available.

Items can be previewed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22 at the auction site. Photos and an inventory list can be found here.
