The $5.2 million project is scheduled to close the Columbus Municipal Airport from Aug. 2 until Aug. 10.
Airport Director Brian Payne told The Republic that the 9 inches of asphalt on the runway intersection is deteriorating. It will be replaced with 10 inches of concrete that is expected to last at least 30 years.
Payne said the concrete also will make it safer for larger aircraft to take off and land during bad weather.
Columbus-based Cummins Inc. plans to have its planes use Indianapolis International Airport during the shutdown.
A federal grant is paying for 90 percent of the project cost.
