An Indiana University school has won a $1.9 million federal grant to boost diversity in the health care workforce.

The grant will enable researchers at IU's Indianapolis medical campus to develop and implement the IU Health Careers Opportunity Program. That initiative is designed to provide disadvantaged students with the academic and social skills to graduate from health professions programs.

The federal grant was awarded to IU's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Initiative director Dr. Austin Agho said the goal is to support statewide and national efforts aimed at diversifying the health care workforce.

That push will use a community approach involving the Eskenazi Health Center, the John Boner Neighborhood Centers, Ivy Tech Community College, Crispus Attucks High School and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.
