The local office of SmithAmundsen LLC is adding two high-profile lawyers as it continues to grow at another firm’s expense.

Chicago-based SmithAmundsen said Sept. 16 it has hired Stephen Stitle and John Tanselle from Krieg DeVault LLP, which has lost at least eight partners to the firm in the past few months.

Stitle, 69, joined SmithAmundsen as its Indiana managing partner and is a member of its banking and financial institutions and business and transactions groups.

He came to Krieg in 2012 from Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank, where he served as its Indiana chairman.

Tanselle, 59, is one of the city’s top banking lawyers and arrives as a partner in SmithAmundsen’sfinancial services group. He had spent his entire nearly 35-year career at Krieg.

Founded in 1997, SmithAmundsen established a presence in Indianapolis by picking off remnants of Stewart & Irwin PC, which closed in 2013. The firm’s local office now boasts 17 lawyers.

Also coming to SmithAmundsen from Krieg are partners Martha Lehman and Gina Thompson. They join other recent arrivals from Krieg, including partners Debra Mastrian, Melinda Shapiro, Larry Tomlin and Mark Wenzel.
