December’s jobless rate was originally reported at 4.4 percent in late January, but was changed to 4.6 percent due to the yearly federal benchmarking process, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said.
Indiana’s labor force added 20,000 workers in January. Private sector employment gains during the month were seen in the Leisure and Hospitality (+4,700), Financial Activities (+1,500) and Construction (+1,200) sectors.
Job contraction was found in the Professional and Business Services (-3,100), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-2,300), and Private Education & Health Services (-1,600) sectors.
The Hoosier labor force participation rate of 64.2 percent in January topped the national level of 62.7 percent.
At 4.6 percent, Indiana had the lowest unemployment rate among its neighboring Midwestern states in January, followed by Ohio (4.9 percent), Michigan (4.9 percent), Kentucky (5.8 percent), and Illinois (6.3 percent).
The national unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent in January, down from 5 percent in December. That's the lowest rate since February 2008.
The DWD will report the state's February unemployment rate on March 25.
