Indy Fringe Festival
It’s that time again…time to head into a theater with little or no idea what you are in for. That’s part of the kick of the Indy Fringe Festival, where $15 gets you a seat in a choice of theaters along Mass Ave. Your adventure could include a monologue by Windy Wynazz, a dramatization of Kurt Vonnegut’s “God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian,” a half-hour “Hamlet,” a musical exploration of growing up “fat, black and gay in the Bible belt,” an improvised hip-hop musical about William Henry Harrison, a time travel film noir featuring the team of Haul & Oatz, a puppet piece dealing with the Iranian revolution, a new adaptation of “The Trojan Women,” and a lot more. Dee Dee Bridgewater
A Grammy Award-winner, a Tony-winning actress, and a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, Dee Dee Bridgewater act should be as interesting between songs as it is entertaining during them. Aug. 19 Cabaret at the Columbia Club Details
Rickie Lee Jones
It’s been a long road since Rickie Lee Jones won a Grammy for Best New Artist and built her reputation on the strength of her self-titled album, which featured the hit “Chuck E.’s in Love,” and her even-stronger follow-up disc, “Pirates.” Her explorations after that took her deeper into jazz and blues and, later, electronic music, but away from commercial hits. Now recording on her own label, her latest album, she continues to tour on the brink of the release of “Rickie Lee Jones: The Other Side of Desire,” a documentary about her life in music.
