The unemployment rate in Indiana fell to 4.6 percent in July after more than 11,000 Hoosiers landed jobs, the state said Friday.

The seasonally-adjusted rate dropped from 4.8 percent in June and 5 percent in May thanks to surging employment numbers, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development said.

Indiana’s labor force —which is composed of both employed and unemployed-but-willing-to-work residents—has grown by more than 192,000 workers since January 2013.

That growth has helped create all-time highs in the state’s total labor force (3,375,563) and total number of employed (3,220,007), the state said.

The DWD said the unemployment ranks dropped by 7,480 in July as 11,272 Hoosiers found employment.

Indiana private-sector employment saw gains in the categories of Professional & Business Services (2,000), Private Education & Health Services (700) and Manufacturing (400). Losses were seen in Leisure & Hospitality (-2,100), Trade, Transportation & Utilities (-1,500) and Construction (-800).

Among Indiana’s neighboring states, Michigan had the lowest unemployment rate in July at 4.5 percent, followed by Ohio (4.8 percent), Kentucky (4.9 percent) and Illinois (5.8 percent).

The national unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in July.
