According to a news release issued Thursday by the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper, Mays-Medley suffered an aneurysm at her home Tuesday morning and was rushed to a local hospital for surgery.

“Doctors say while she still has a way to go in her recovery, the businesswoman is incredibly blessed to have survived such an incident,” the news release says. “Currently, Mays-Medley is recovering at a local hospital. Health care personnel are optimistic that she will make a full recovery.”

Mays-Medley served as publisher of the Indianapolis Recorder for 13 years. She left that position in 2010 when she was appointed to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. She left the utility regulatory commission upon her appointment to the White River State Park Commission job in April.

She also served as a Democrat in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2002-2008.

The White River State Park Development Commission oversees the 250-acre park in downtown Indianapolis, which includes the Indiana State Museum; the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art; the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens; Victory Field and other attractions.
