Thursday's vote was 7-2 to approve realignment, which is pending approval from Purdue University trustees on Dec. 16. The new structure would take effect on July 1, 2018, at the 13,000-student campus.
Under the plan, IU would focus on health and sciences along with the Indiana University Medical School in Fort Wayne. Purdue would handle all other academics and transfer its nursing, radiography and dental education programs to Indiana University.
Leaders from both schools announced the plan to split the campus in April. They said the goal would be to reverse enrollment decline, improve the rate of student success and strengthen the school's contribution to northwest Indiana.
