Klutz will be the first certified public accountant to be Indiana auditor, the top state official in charge of paying the state's bills and accounting for state money, according to Holcomb's office. Holcomb, a Republican, needed to choose a new state auditor because current Auditor Suzanne Crouch was elected as Holcomb's running mate to be lieutenant governor.
Holcomb said he chose Klutz because she has served in a similar job in one of Indiana's largest counties.
"Tera Klutz, with her years of experience as a county auditor and as a certified public accountant, is ready to immediately assume the duties of Indiana's chief financial officer," said Holcomb, who made the announcement at the Allen County Republican Party headquarters.
Democrats hope Klutz "will focus on transparency and accountability so that Hoosiers have confidence in how their tax dollars are managed," Indiana Democratic Party spokesman Drew Anderson said.
Klutz will be sworn in on Jan. 9 along with Holcomb, Crouch and other statewide officials at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Klutz has been Allen County auditor since 2010 and previously was the county's chief deputy auditor. She is president-elect of the Indiana Auditors' Association.
Crouch's salary as state auditor is about $78,150 and Klutz makes about $82,600 as Allen County auditor, according to The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette.
Precinct officials will fill Klutz's open Allen County position.
