The city of Greenwood announced Thursday that it has finalized a deal to pay $1 million to purchase the Greenwood Middle School property in the heart of its downtown.

Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers said the 19-acre site at 523 S. Madison Ave., south of Main Street, presents a rare opportunity for the city and its growing downtown.

“It’s not often a property of this size, in the heart of a downtown, becomes available to be reimagined,” he said in a written statement. “Old Town’s resurgence continues to gain momentum, and this is another important milestone. The potential for this property is off the charts, and we plan to tap into every last bit.”

City officials are discussing redevelopment opportunities for the property but have yet to finalize any plans.

The city agreed to buy the land from the Greenwood Community School Corp. The school district is building a new middle school on Greenwood’s southwest side that should be ready for the 2017-18 school year.
