Subscribe NowThe Ivy Tech Community College Foundation announced Tuesday that it has received a land donation from the Eskenazi Family Foundation that will enable the college to build a new automotive technology center.
The six-acre parcel at 4751 W. Century Plaza Road, near Lafayette and Georgetown roads on the city’s northwest side, is valued at $1 million, Ivy Tech said. A former Loews Movie Theater occupies the site.
Ivy Tech hopes to have the center built by fall 2018. It will be named the Mike & Sandy Jarvis Automotive Technology Training Center.
A $5 million gift from board member J. Michael Jarvis will help pay for the center. The donation was the largest in the school's history.
“We are so grateful to Sid and Lois Eskenazi for their generous gift of land,” Kathleen Lee, chancellor for Ivy Tech Indianapolis, said in a press release. “We are thrilled to have this prime location for the future home of our automotive center and know that it will be a gift to students for many years to come.”
In honor of thegift, Ivy Tech plans to name the Illinois Street crosswalk on its downtown Indianapolis Campus the “Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Pathway to Success.”
IBJ reported Aug. 19 that Ivy Tech is in discussions with local developer TWG Development Inc. to sell its building at 1331 E. Washington St. that currently houses the college’s automotive program.
Ivy Tech said automotive technicians are in high demand. Data from June showed their were almost 500 openings for automotive specialty technicians in Indiana.
