Kudos to Sen. Todd Young for his April 12 Forefront column, “Is the Green New Deal a good idea?”

The senator succinctly explained why, in his words, “The Green New Deal is unaffordable, unattainable and unrealistic.”

As though the Green New Deal isn’t ridiculous enough, inserting socialist policies like Medicare for All and guaranteed income into the proposal is a transparent and appalling intent to destroy the foundation of America as envisioned by our Founding Fathers and embodied in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Such proposals advanced by socialists in the Senate and Congress are validated by an aligned media. Together they are aggressively perpetuating a relentless assault on the principles that comprise America’s greatness.

The federal government does not and should not have the freedom to guarantee happiness to select segments of the citizenry, financed by those who honor our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Democrats in the Senate who voted “present” and not “for” the Green New Deal vividly displayed their true intentions, and reprised a long-ignored future for America articulated by Nikita Khrushchev in 1960: “We cannot expect Americans to jump from capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism.”

I am not an alarmist, religious fanatic, far right extremist or nationalist of any ilk. At 71 years old, and blessed with 16 grandkids, I am deeply concerned that they will not reach my age having enjoyed and cherished, as I have, the freedoms embodied in our country’s young history that so many have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep.

Thanks to Sen. Young for championing common sense and standing up to defend our freedoms.
