Guide Corp. has told its employees that its Anderson car taillight plant will close today, ahead of a June 2007 target announced in October.

The action was caused by General Motors’ shifting production to alternative, lower-cost producers, the Pendleton company said in a statement published on The Herald Bulletin‘s Web site.

About 265 hourly workers are affected immediately. The 160 remaining hourly workers as well as salaried employees were told to immediately begin shuttering the site, the statement said.

“Guide was advised that this action was being moved forward in order for GM to more quickly realize a cost advantage on the parts produced by Guide and is consistent with the strategy being implemented as part of GM’s North American turnaround plan,” the statement said.

Approximately 350 hourly workers were laid off from the Anderson plant in December. It once employed 1,000.
